The Hammers co-owner will take a much more active role in transfers this summer, if a suitable new director of football is not available, according to Six Foot Two.

I really don’t understand why Newman’s head should be on the chopping block already…for two reasons.

Firstly, Moyes clearly wanted to change his system into more of a possession-based one last summer. And Newman clearly identified players to suit that particular playing style.

Half-way through the season, Moyes realised it wasn’t working and reverted to a counter-attacking system – one that has made some of our new signings completely null and void. So Newman shouldn’t be blamed for the players brought in to the club not suiting our current playing style.

Secondly, Mark Noble only began his role at the club in January. He is sporting director at the London Stadium, so if David Sullivan really was so keen to move Rob Newman on from West Ham, surely Noble would be the man to slot into the football director role.

The Hammers co-owner taking an active role in transfers, i.e which players we do and don’t sign, has disaster written all over it.

Let’s hope that it’s all just rumours at the moment, and either Newman is given one more chance to prove his worth, or a well-known name is brought in to replace him.
