The star West Ham allegedly want to replace Declan Rice has rejected a move to Newcastle move in fresh Kalvin Phillips twist.
When journalist David Ornstein revealed last week that Man City were set to sign Mateo Kovacic it looked like being good news for West Ham and Newcastle United.
According to a recent report from The Evening Standard, West Ham are monitoring the situation of Manchester City ace Kalvin Phillips ahead of the summer transfer window.
The reports claim he is seen as a potential replacement for Declan Rice – who will be leaving the Hammers this summer.
Champions League bound Newcastle have also been linked with a bid for Phillips, though.
Star West Ham allegedly want to replace Declan Rice rejects Newcastle move in fresh Kalvin Phillips twist
West Ham tried to sign Phillips from Leeds for £55m back in January 2022 only to see him join Man City last summer.
He has endured a torrid time at the Etihad, though, making just four starts under Pep Guardiola.
But the star West Ham allegedly want to replace Rice has rejected Newcastle move in a fresh Phillips twist.
According to The Telegraph, Newcastle have made an early move to enquire about Phillips’ availability.
However, what they have been told is bad news for the Magpies and West Ham.
Bad news for Hammers and Newcastle as landscape changes over Phillips
Phillips has reportedly snubbed Newcastle’s advances and stated that he fully intends to stay at Man City and prove he is not a £50m flop.
“Newcastle had identified Phillips as a target several weeks ago and were led to believe he could be made available for transfer, but have been frustrated by the response from the player’s camp,” the report claims.
“Telegraph Sport understands that Phillips does not want to give up on City and wants to challenge himself to succeed under Pep Guardiola.”
Unless the situation changes – which it could well do depending on the moves Man City make in central midfield this summer – then it seems West Ham and Newcastle will have to look elsewhere for a defensive midfielder this summer.
West Ham and Newcastle have also been credited with a mutual interest in Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse.
The transfer window opens for domestic deals on June 14th.
