The defeat for Inter prompted an emotional reaction from the Italian press, with Tuttosport, for instance, writing ‘Dream Interrupted’ as its main headline.
They wrote that Inter matched City but paid for errors and misfortune, with Romelu Lukaku ‘saving’ an effort from Federico Dimarco, before the striker missed an inviting opportunity to score with a header.
In addition, they reflected on a ‘hat-trick of defeats’ for Italy in European finals this season, with Roma losing on penalties to Sevilla in the Europa League final, while Fiorentina were beaten by West Ham in the Europa Conference League final.
Meanwhile, La Gazzetta Sportiva led with ‘Tears of Champions’. The paper commented that Inter played ‘on level terms’ with City for much of the game but were wasteful with their chances.
