Harry Kane comments will make Spurs fans hating on West Ham United look silly after their European triumph.
While West Ham’s fiercest rivals will always be Millwall, there is no love lost between the Hammers and Tottenham Hotspur either.
A brief glance at social media will tell you that most weekends.
There are frosty relations between the boardrooms too after fallouts regarding a transfer deal and rival bids to take over the Olympic Stadium.
That has seen an unofficial transfer embargo between West Ham Tottenham for over a decade.
No love lost between West Ham and Spurs and it shows
West Ham were expecting to sign striker Emmanuel Adebayor from Tottenham on deadline day back in 2015. But Daniel Levy pulled the plug on the deal at the very last moment.
That sparked a furious outburst from recently passed West Ham co-owner David Gold at the time as he criticised Levy on Twitter.
Spurs, like West Ham, are a big club with a big fanbase. But Tottenham’s lack of success and silverware to back up the lofty opinion some of their fans have of themselves has made them a running joke in football.
So West Ham fans have understandably taken great delight in the fact they have now won a major trophy more recently than Spurs (2008).
Given the rivalry between the two clubs it is also understandable that some Tottenham supporters might try to play down West Ham’s success following their Europa Conference League glory.
Harry Kane comments make Spurs fans hating on West Ham look silly after European triumph
Some – not all – Tottenham supporters have been labelling the Conference League a ‘Mickey Mouse’ competition.
But Harry Kane comments make Spurs fans hating on West Ham look silly after the European triumph.
“You can’t disrespect any competition that you play in,” Spurs talisman Kane said last month as Spurs were scrapping to try and get into one of the European spots.
“It’s one of those, if you end up in the Conference League and win it, it’s worth it. If you don’t, then people probably look at it as an inconvenience.
“But when you’ve been at a club where we haven’t won a trophy for 15 years, if we do end up in it, it could be an opportunity to try and put that to bed.”
Argument of the haters falls at first hurdle
Well said that man. Tottenham fans take note.
It is also worth noting that West Ham went through the entire competition unbeaten, winning all but one game.
But Spurs lost to Pacos Ferreira in qualifying and fielded their strongest available side, including Kane, to ensure they made the group stages.
When there they drew 2-2 with Rennes and lost 1-0 to Vitesse before being eliminated from the competition when they could not fulfil their final fixture due to a Covid outbreak.
Spurs fielded their strongest available team against Rennes and also fielded a decent XI against Vitesse. So their argument falls down.
Other than the trophy, perhaps the best response for West Ham fans to those of a Spurs persuasion, who are trying to put a dampener on the achievement, is to point out the Hammers are now in the Europa League again next season.
And Tottenham aren’t.
