Arsenal are ‘really considering’ a move for Chelsea attacker Kai Havertz this summer, with ‘talks progressing well’ over a deal, according to reports.
It’s no secret that Mikel Arteta is keen to strengthen his squad. But, it would still come as quite a shock if the Germany international made the switch to the Emirates.
Indeed, Havertz endured a difficult 2022/23 campaign with Chelsea. Due to their lack of a fit striker for much of the season, he was forced to play out-of-position as a centre-forward.
Overall, in 35 Premier League appearances, Havertz scored seven goals. Chelsea’s lack of a proven goal scorer had a detrimental impact, with the Blues finishing in 12th place – their worst finish since 1994.
As a result, Chelsea failed to qualify for the Champions League. And, Havertz is open to leaving Stamford Bridge this summer.
As reported by Football365, Real Madrid registered an interest in signing the attacker. However, the LaLiga giants were put off by his price tag.
Now. according to journalist Florian Plettenberg, talks are ‘progressing well’ between the German and Arsenal.
On Twitter, he wrote: “Arsenal is really considering a transfer of Havertz for summer. Talks proceeding well – confirmed. Havertz is keen to join Arsenal.
“Understand the price valuation is around £60m. A move to Arsenal is more realistic than to Real Madrid, as it stands.”
As mentioned, Arteta has a number of ambitious plans for the transfer window.
Declan Rice remains the manager’s priority. Arsenal have seen an £80m bid knocked back by West Ham, but will return with an improved offer.
But, the Gunners are still working on other deals in the background, as they prepare for Champions League football.
Havertz certainly has plenty of experience in the Champions League, too. During his time at Chelsea and RB Leipzig, he has made 39 appearances in the competition, scoring six goals.
Of course, the 24-year-old also played a key role in Chelsea’s Champions League-winning campaign in 2021. So, he could be exactly the kind of player Arsenal need.
But, while talks between Havertz and Arsenal are progressing well, the Gunners still need to agree on a fee with Chelsea.
As noted by Plettenberg, Chelsea want £60m. So, it will be interesting to see if Arsenal match that fee.
Havertz won’t be the only high-profile player to leave Chelsea this summer. For instance, Manchester United have already made one failed bid for Mason Mount.
Also, Mateo Kovacic has already agreed personal terms with Manchester City and N’Golo Kante has agreed to join Saudi club Al Ittihad.
There are expected to be other outgoings, too. So, Mauricio Pochettino will have a very different Chelsea squad at his disposal next season.
