Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount is not worth any more than £40million amidst links to Manchester United, according to former Premier League striker Gabby Agbonlahor.
The Red Devils have made Mount one of their top summer targets and have had two bids rejected by Chelsea.
They opened with a £40m offer before coming back with a bid worth £45m plus £5m in add-ons, with the Blues then asking for £60m plus £5m in add-ons.
United and Chelsea have now reportedly reached a ‘compromise’ that will see the England international move to Old Trafford.
However, ex-Aston Villa striker Agbonlhaor is not convinced Mount is worth what the Red Devils will be paying for the player, who is out of contract next summer.
“I’d honestly say he’s worth £40m maximum,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider.
“If Chelsea ask for much more than that, I think Man United should put the phone down – because they aren’t being serious.
“Mount has been out of form, his stats aren’t great. Chelsea don’t want to give him a new contract, so surely it suits them to sell him?
“Man United should pull out if they can’t get something sorted, and that leaves Chelsea stuck with a player who is going to be available for free.
“I think Chelsea will have to stop being stubborn later in this window. £40m is about right, but even that is a lot of money for someone who has been out of form.”
Given Mount’s ability, tactical flexibility, reputation, and the fact he fits the homegrown quota, to say £40m is too much is quite silly, regardless of his contract situation.
Lots of players are expected to leave Chelsea this summer, with Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly and Hakim Ziyech all poised to move to Saudi Arabia.
Conor Gallagher is another player attracting interest from elsewhere. Newcastle United, West Ham and Brighton are all reportedly keen, but Agbonlahor reckons he would be a good fit under Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham.
He said: “I think he could help them out.
“I don’t think he’s got the quality to be a regular at Chelsea, with where Chelsea want to be in the table.
“He’s not a midfielder who is good enough to play for a title challenger. He’s not good enough.
“But for Spurs, they’re the eighth-best team in the league – and I think he’d be a good addition to that side.
“He’d probably play week-in, week-out at the moment with [Rodrigo] Bentancur out injured.”
