L’Equipe claims a club are literally waiting for call from David Sullivan to sell their star Matteo Guendouzi to West Ham instead of Aston Villa.
When The Athletic journalist David Ornstein claimed last month that West Ham boss David Moyes wanted to bring Matteo Guendouzi back to the Premier League, it carried weight.
The former Arsenal star has been linked with West Ham for some time.
And the likes of L’Equipe claimed Moyes sees him as one of the potential replacements for the departing Declan Rice.
Ornstein confirmed West Ham’s interest but the problem for Moyes was the emergence of Aston Villa as rivals bidders.
A report from Téléfoot stated Aston Villa are ‘ready to welcome’ Guendouzi to Villa Park in the summer transfer window.
Unai Emery has worked wonders at Aston Villa and reports claimed he is a huge fan of the France international midfielder.
L’Equipe claims club literally waiting for David Sullivan call to sell their star Matteo Guendouzi to West Ham over Aston Villa
Villa’s interest looked to have put paid to any West Ham plans to sign the 24-year-old.
Because football journalist Mohamed Toubache, claimed Aston Villa were in pole position for two reasons.
The first being Guendouzi’s strong relationship with Emery following their time together at Arsenal. The second his close friendship with Villa midfielder and compatriot Boubacar Kamara.
There has been a development over at Marseille, though, it seems.
L’Équipe claims the club are literally waiting for a call from David Sullivan to sell their star Guendouzi to West Ham over Aston Villa.
In a new report the French outlet has acknowledged the interest of West Ham and Villa in Guendouzi.
Villa were reported to be in ‘pole position’ just last month
But it states West Ham are now leading the chase with a move fully expected as soon as Rice is sold.
That deal could go through in the coming days as the race for Rice hots up. And until West Ham officially appoint their new director of football, Sullivan will continue to head up transfer negotiations.
“Marseille and Guendouzi’s entourage are expecting an offer to come from the Hammers once the England international’s move is complete,” the reports claim.
“Marseille have begun work on reshuffling the squad, with several players likely to leave.
“In particular, midfielder Matteo Guendouzi is seen as one of the members of the squad who would be able to fetch a high transfer fee. The French international has impressed in his two full seasons with Les Phocéens, and could be in line for a return to the Premier League.”
The fact West Ham are now said to be in pole position could also be down to the fact Aston Villa moved early to secure the fantastic free transfer signing of midfielder Youri Tielemans following the expiration of his contract at Leicester.
West Ham are also being linked with Joao Palhinha, Edson Alvarez, James Ward-Prowse and Yunus Musah.
