Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted it is a “no-brainer” for Man United to sign Everton’s Jordan Pickford this summer.
The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the England star is “so much better” than David de Gea at playing out from the back.
According to the Daily Star (17 June), Man United are preparing a £45million bid for Pickford amid doubts over the future of De Gea.
The report claims the England shot-stopper would double his current £100,000-a-week salary with a move to Old Trafford.
Football Insider revealed last week (16 June) that De Gea is delaying a decision over a new Man United contract amid concerns over rumours linking the Red Devils with a new goalkeeper.
The Spaniard, who won the Premier League Golden Glove for the 2022-23 campaign, is out of contract at the end of the month.
When asked if Pickford could deal with the pressure of succeeding De Gea, Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think so. I really rate him.
“I’ve been saying all along that Spurs should go and get him, but they’re going for Raya.
“I really like Pickford. He’s England’s number one, and he is now getting more and more reliable.
“It’s a no-brainer to bring him in. De Gea needs that competition.
“Man United won’t get Dean Henderson back involved, and that makes sense.
“Every top club has a top goalkeeper – and Pickford is so much better than De Gea at playing out from the back, just as Ten Hag wants.”
