Tottenham Hotspur are nearing a summer deal for Edmond Tapsoba worth £25million
According to The Daily Star (h/t The Express), Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur are close to securing a deal for Bayer Leverkusen star Edmond Tapsoba in the summer transfer window.
The defender is in favour of moving to north London and will reinforce a rearguard that conceded 63 goals in the Premier League last season. To put matters into context, only five other teams conceded more than Spurs in the 2022-23 Premier League season.
It thus makes sense that the Lilywhites are looking at defenders this summer. The 24-year-old Burkina Faso international is a modern-day centre-back who is a good fit for Ange Postecoglou’s system.
Comfortable with both feet, Tapsoba is the player Tottenham have cried out for some time to partner Cristian Romero in the defence. A deal worth £25m appears to be in the works and will represent excellent value for money for Tottenham.
A good passer, Tapsoba will certainly aid Postecoglou’s syle by bringing the ball out from the back. He does, however, lack aerial prowess and it is something that needs to be worked on. Thankfully Romero is more of a physical presence and can prove to be the best foil for the 24-year-old should he move to the N-17.
Tottenham are also interested in re-signing Clement Lenglet who returned to Barcelona following a season-long loan in north London. Wolfsburg star Micky Van de Ven is also another option under consideration.
Whether the Lilywhites are keen to bring in more than one defender is debatable. Either way, it is no secret that the defence for now remains a massive Achilles Heel.

It could be the difference between us winning silverware or falling short yet again. Even if we sign Tapsoba, one can argue we need another defender to add quality depth – perhaps one who can also double up as a left-back.
