Declan’s problem: Career or family?
Hughie Southon looks at Declan’s career or family problem
As the endless Declan Rice saga drifts on it opens up an interesting “career or family” problem that faces many of us as we make our way through life.
Declan has that geographical area versus professional success syndrome in front f him that can be so tricky to solve and in many ways one has to admire his apparent reaction to put family first.
With a young child recently born and being a southern boy, his heart is set on remaining in the the south east and many of us would feel exactly the same.
Right now Arsenal would be his obvious choice although under Pochettino I see Chelsea becoming a force again next season.
However, Declan has also spoken strongly of his desire to play Champions League football and win things. It has to be said if that truly is the case he will be infinitely better served by a move to Manchester City.
And lets be straightforward! Were he to play for them – let’s say for six years – that is hardly a hardship in a lifetime when he can travel to and fro to his beloved south easy during the summer and at various other times while fulfilling his ambitions at the same time.
He may actually like it up there!
No way would anyone here try to advise him on how to balance his objectives but from a professional point of view not many would disagree that City would have to be the preference!
