James Maddison reveals what Ange Postecoglou told him to convince him to join Tottenham
James Maddison has officially become a Tottenham Hotspur player, completing his much-anticipated transfer from Leicester City this week.
Speaking on Tottenham Official, Maddison wasted no time in giving his first interview as a Spurs player, shedding light on the conversations with Ange Postecoglou that convinced him to make the move.
Tottenham supporters have long lamented the absence of a creative force in midfield since Christian Eriksen’s departure in 2020. Fortunately, in James Maddison, they may have found the perfect solution.
Ange Postecoglou, known for his preference for a 4-3-3 formation, undoubtedly recognizes the need for midfield creativity, which Maddison has consistently demonstrated in the Premier League.
Over his tenure at Leicester City, the Englishman has made a significant impact, featuring in 203 games, scoring an impressive 55 goals and providing 41 assists. This equates to almost a goal contribution every other game.
Maddison’s arrival marks Tottenham’s third signing of the summer window, following the captures of Guglielmo Vicario and the permanent deal for Dejan Kulusevski. Speaking about his conversation with Postecoglou, here is what he said
“Speaking to the manager was very important, how he’s going to be, with that little bit of the unknown, so to have a decent chat with him and to get his thoughts on things, how he sees Spurs going this season… he said one thing to me on the call, I hope he won’t mind me saying this, but he said, ‘whether you come or not, you’re going to see a completely different Spurs team under me,’ and that kind of stuck with me that he said that.”
The excitement among Tottenham fans is palpable, and rightly so. Not only has the club secured their top target of the summer, but they have also done so well before the start of July, which means he can be integrated into the plans really soon.
If Tottenham can maintain this momentum in the transfer market, it provides Postecoglou with a rare opportunity to work with his full squad during pre-season, a luxury seldom afforded to managers at Spurs.
