Tottenham Hotspur have been subject to links with a move for Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso as the Lilywhites prepare their transfer blueprint ahead of 2025 intervals.
Daniel Levy has been looking to compound on their options in the middle of the park given how Ange Postecoglou has been keen on playing a dynamic and possession-based football, which (as we have seen) demands depth and versatility in the middle of the park, and the American midfielder Johnny Cardoso has been aggressively linked with a move to White Hart Lane given his impressive performances for Real Betis in the Spanish top tier.
Cardoso’s skill set is a bit different from what Spurs have in the middle of the park; he has a bit of James Maddison’s creative aspects and has the capacity to anchor the midfield like Yves Bissouma.
And Spurs have an advantage to land his signatures owing to the agreed priority option with the Spanish giants to land the 23-year-old midfielder. Levy included the option as part of the deal that took Giovani Lo Celso to Betis, per transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on X.
Levy’s smart deal could land Tottenham Cardoso
Now, former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson insists that the Lilywhites are finely placed to secure Cardoso’s signatures.
Speaking on the latest edition of the Inside Track podcast (via. Football Insider), Robinson credits Spurs chairman Daniel Levy with the deal and suggests that the footballing world hasn’t seen a deal like this yet.
He said:
“They’re in a win-win situation at Tottenham. You either get a top player in great form, who’s almost doubled his value over the last six months, or they get a share when he’s sold for a fortune.
“It’s very much a Daniel Levy deal. It’s incredible. They get first dibs on a player, and if he doesn’t sign for them, they get a percentage of his sale.
“He’s still only 23, got 17 caps for the USA and he’s got room to get better.
“He’s been playing very well for Betis this season and he’s clearly a good player.
“The Premier League is very different to La Liga with the pace of the game, but he’s definitely an option for them. There’s an abundance of talent in that Tottenham midfield, but he’s playing well and he’s put in a couple of man of the match performances.
“It’s an interesting one to keep an eye on, but does he start for Spurs? He’d be a good player for the squad but I’m not sure where he fits in.
“But the deal is one I don’t think we’ve ever seen before.”
The player has been subject to links with Atletico Madrid as well as Aston Villa; however, at the moment, Tottenham look like runaway winners to his signatures.
