Alessandro Buongiorno joins long list of Tottenham Hotspur’s centre-back targets
According to the Daily Mail, Torino captain Alessandro Buongiorno has emerged as a potential centre-back target for Tottenham Hotspur as they look to fortify their defence this summer.
Spurs endured a lacklustre season across the pitch, but their weakest link was undoubtedly their defence. The Lilywhites conceded a staggering 63 goals in the Premier League during the 2022/23 campaign, a tally surpassed by only five teams last year, three of which were ultimately relegated.
New Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has wasted no time in making his intentions clear to the board, stressing the urgent need to acquire a top-class central defender this summer. Consequently, a flurry of names have been thrown into the ring.
At present, it appears that the top contenders for the coveted centre-back position are Edmond Tapsoba from Bayer Leverkusen and Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Another name has surfaced in the Tottenham Hotspur defensive targets list: Alessandro Buongiorno. Buongiorno, a 24-year-old Italian international, dons the captain’s armband for Torino and featured in 38 games for the Serie A side last season across all competitions.
Impressing from the heart of the defence, he even managed to contribute one goal and two assists along the way. Spurs are now believed to be “interested” in the talented Italian, although it remains uncertain where he stands on the club’s extensive list of potential centre-back recruits.
Buongiorno possesses a skill set that could greatly benefit Tottenham’s backline. With his composure, leadership qualities, and ability to read the game, he could potentially bring stability to a defence that has been alarmingly porous in recent times.
While Tottenham’s pursuit of Buongiorno intensifies, it is worth noting that he is just one of several options being considered by the club. The board and coaching staff are carefully assessing a range of prospects, evaluating their suitability and compatibility within the team’s tactical framework.
