Liverpool legend John Aldridge recently shared his perspective on Caoimhin Kelleher and the challenges he faces in securing the starting goalkeeper position due to the presence of Alisson as the team’s established number-one goalkeeper.
Kelleher’s future at the club is uncertain at the moment as he has been playing as a second fiddle to Alisson Becker. Although Jurgen Klopp has given him chances to play, it has been a rare sight and the keeper would need more regular minutes of action next season.
Aldridge stated that the keeper needs to develop his skills by playing more often. However, he would benefit by staying at Anfield next summer.
As stated by the Independent, the former keeper said:
“It’s a tough one. I think he got found out in the last game of the season (4-4 draw at Southampton) because he was very rusty. He played his worst game for the club.”
“That apart, the lad has got everything going for him in modern-day football. He needs to play games. It’s alright training, but you get your experience playing games. They have got three cups where he will play; the FA Cup, League Cup and the Europa League.”
“So he will get more games than in other seasons. He’s still very young, very talented, so I’d selfishly want to keep him. You have to see how the lad feels and what the club wants. He could get into a lot of Premier League sides, but I obviously hope he stays at Liverpool.”
The final decision regarding Kelleher’s future will depend on various factors, including the player’s aspirations and Liverpool’s plans for him.
Aldridge expressed his hope that Kelleher would choose to remain at Liverpool, where he is valued and appreciated. As a supporter, Aldridge believes the keeper has a bright future ahead at the club, and he considers the young goalkeeper to be an excellent second-choice option for Liverpool at present.
With the Reds facing a demanding schedule and multiple competitions in the near future, it is expected that Kelleher will have opportunities to showcase his talent.
However, in the previous season, he only made five appearances across all competitions, which is far from an ideal situation for the player.
