Transfer insider Graeme Bailey has explained how there’s “blood in the water” amid Liverpool’s pursuit of their “top target” Levi Colwill, who they’re “pushing hard” for.
The Reds are obviously keen on improving upon their fifth-placed Premier League finish last season. While some teams would be happy with Europa League football, it was the first time Jurgen Klopp’s side had finished outside the top four for seven years.
As such, they’re making some much-needed squad improvements. That begun with midfield pair Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.
Now, 20-year-old Chelsea defender Colwill is top of the pile. Indeed, injuries and periods of poor form last season mean another centre-back would be ideal for the Reds, and they feel he could fill the position for years to come.
They’re reportedly ‘confident’ on signing the defender, given he’s not convinced Stamford Bridge is where his long-term future lies. That likely owes to the fact the Blues have a history of shipping out young talents without giving them much chance.
Transfer insider Bailey has added fuel to the fire that the Reds are in a good position to land Colwill.
“There’s something in this. Liverpool are pushing hard for this, there’s blood in the water, and they can really sense that,” he said on Talking Transfers.
That would suggest Chelsea are bowing to the pressure of Liverpool’s interest, and may crumble and sanction a deal for Colwill, who previous reports have stated they value at £68million.
Bailey reiterated Liverpool’s confidence in landing the 20-year-old.
“I think Liverpool, he is their top target now. There is a belief at Anfield that they could get him,” he added.
Given that belief, they’ll obviously continue their push to sign Colwill, and it certainly sounds as if there’s a chance they could sign him this summer.
It seems all the more important now that they do sign him than it was previously, if they’re desperate for a new centre-back. That’s because their fallback option, Perr Schuurs, has reportedly struck an agreement with Crystal Palace.
As such, if it’s not Colwill that Klopp’s side gets, and it clearly looks as if Schuurs will now be off the table, they’ll have to go on the hunt for another centre-back.
