Hammers boss David Moyes may have dropped his biggest hint yet over who the new West Ham United captain will be.
There has been much speculation over who West Ham’s new captain will be following the departure of Declan Rice.
West Ham have lost inspirational captains and leaders two summers running following the retirement of Mark Noble and sale of Rice.
Aaron Cresswell, Lukasz Fabianski and Angelo Ogbonna acted as joint vice-captains to Rice last season.
But Cresswell is being linked with a move to Wolves while neither Fabianski or Ogbonna will be guaranteed starters for the Hammers next season.
And while the overall club captain doesn’t necessarily have to be a guaranteed starter – as Noble proved previously – the matchday captain is a hugely important role.

That has led to much debate over who should take up the baton as West Ham’s new skipper.
Speaking during the tour of Australia, David Moyes said he has not made a decision on a new captain but insisted he has time to sort the situation out.
With the season just three weeks away, though, the clock is ticking.
Many believe it could and should be Nayef Aguerd. Thilo Kehrer is a big voice in the dressing room too but he – like many others – is not guaranteed to start.
Now Moyes may have dropped his biggest hint yet over who the new West Ham captain will be.
Big honour for Big Tom?
Because the Scot named trusted and selfless midfield workhorse Tomas Soucek as his captain for the friendly at Dagenham and Redbridge.
The experienced Czech is a massive fan favourite and one of the first names on the teamsheet for Moyes. He is well liked by all, a true leader who puts his neck on the line for the team and his teammates. And his workrate, desire, attitude and effort can never be questioned.
Soucek is someone you would want to be beside in the trenches.
Many supporters believe Soucek will get back to his goalscoring best now Rice has departed.
Hammers News pointed out at the start of the 2021/22 season that Moyes had changed the dynamic between Soucek and Rice to allow the latter more freedom to rampage around the pitch.
Moyes has since admitted that experiment did not work and he was wrong to mess with the formula with Rice failing to offer the same goal threat as big Tom.
Soucek took the armband against the Daggers and that could have been a clear sign from Moyes that he will be the man officially made West Ham’s new skipper.
Particularly as he already captains his country.
