Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has huge expectations from Ben Davies
Speaking to Football. London, Ange Postecoglou has instilled great expectations in Ben Davies, seeing him as a linchpin for Tottenham Hotspur in the forthcoming season.
As the summer rebuild gathers momentum, the gaffer is meticulously examining his squad during the pre-season to assemble the ideal team that complements his attacking brand of football.
Spurs’ transfer activity has been bustling, with exciting signings such as James Maddison, Guglielmo Vicario, and Manor Solomon. Moreover, permanent deals for Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro have added permanence to their already impressive roster.
However, amidst the influx of new talent, some familiar faces might bid farewell to North London. There are a number of players being linked with an exit from the club with Davinson Sanchez and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg garnering the most attention.
Among the uncertainties lies the left-back position, which has become a puzzle for the Australian tactician to solve. Ryan Sessegnon’s untimely hamstring surgery has ruled him out until September, leaving the position up for grabs.
Ivan Perisic, for all his experience, is at best a left wing-back and might not be able to play in a back four. Sergio Reguilon is back at the club and his performances in the pre-season have been pretty much reminiscent of his entire Spurs career – excellent going forward but poor defensively.
Tottenham have signed Destiny Udogie who will be in his first season at the club but he is far from the finished article and is pretty much similar to Reguilon. That leaves us with Ben Davies – the veteran Welshman.
Speaking about the situation, here is what Postecoglou had to say about the player perfectly fitting his system
“I think Ben has all the attributes I look for in a full back, particularly the way we play. At the moment he’s doing a job at CB but my inclination is that he will be a very very good left-back for us.”
