According to reports, Liverpool are no longer looking at long-term target Matheus Nunes as their “focus” is now on Southampton star Romeo Lavia.
The Premier League giants have been consistently linked with Nunes over the past couple of seasons.
Wolves jumped ahead of Liverpool in the race for Nunes last summer and the 24-year-old completed a £38m move to the Premier League side before the 2022/23 season.
The Portugal international impressed for Wolves last season and he has continued to be linked with Liverpool ahead of this summer’s midfield overhaul.
But Liverpool have since turned their attention to alternative targets. Around £95m has been spent to sign Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai from Brighton and RB Leipzig.
Now with Jordan Henderson (and maybe Fabinho) heading to Saudi Arabia, Liverpool are looking for a third midfield signing and Southampton’s Lavia is their preferred target.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that Nunes “was on Liverpool’s list in January” but they are currently “focused” on Lavia.
“Matheus Nunes – A player linked with big moves in recent times, but Wolves already lost Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves in the midfield this summer, so there’s no news at all about Nunes right now. Wolves will do their best to keep him,” Romano told Caught Offside.
“For sure he was on Liverpool’s list in January, but now their focus is on Romeo Lavia.”

Liverpool have already failed with one bid for Lavia and The Athletic’s David Ornstein confirmed earlier this week they will submit an improved offer for the £50m-rated teenager.
£100m-rated Brighton standout Moises Caicedo could also be on the move this summer amid significant interest from Chelsea.
Liverpool reporter Neil Jones has admitted that Caicedo would be his “ideal target” over Lavia.
“My ideal target, even if it’s not realistic, would probably be Moises Caicedo. I like Lavia, and think he could grow into a quality first-team player, but Caicedo is a more established player and would be my dream signing in that position,” Jones told Caught Offside.
“For me, he just ticks every box that you’d want from a Liverpool player to change this team going forward.
“He’s Premier League-proven, he’s energetic, he’s strong, he can pass, he can run, he’s shown he can fill in at right-back which could work well in a team with a roaming right-back like Trent Alexander-Arnold. Sadly, it doesn’t feel like it’s going to be possible this summer.”
