Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has dismissed the possibility of Jurgen Klopp’s team competing in the title race.
The 49-year-old is unconvinced that the Reds possess the necessary elements to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title this season, attributing this perspective to their transfer activities during the summer.
In recent months, Liverpool have bid farewell to a number of seasoned players, primarily from the midfield position. Departures from Anfield include Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner, and Jordan Henderson.
Liverpool have also said goodbye to Brazilian defensive midfielder Fabinho, who transferred to Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad for £40 million.
Despite this, the team has only introduced two new players: Alexis Mac Allister, a World Cup winner from Brighton & Hove Albion, and Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig.
Liverpool are also in the process of securing a deal for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia, who is seen as a direct replacement for Fabinho. However, the transfer is still pending confirmation.
Although the signings of Mac Allister and Szoboszlai are impressive, Hamann believes that Liverpool needs to bring in more reinforcements this summer. If they fail to do so, achieving a Champions League qualification spot could become challenging.
While speaking to the German outlet Berchtesgadener Anzeiger, he said:
“If the squad stays like this until the end of the transfer window, it would be a great success for Liverpool to finish in the top four. If the Reds don’t get off to a good start this season, it could quickly become uncomfortable.”
Liverpool will commence their Premier League season with a challenging match against a revitalized Chelsea team this upcoming weekend.
This is a crucial match as a win in this match will help them gain confidence at the start of the season. But the Reds still need to make signings if they want to stay alive in the title race and the Europa League.

Leaving the transfer window without a specialized defensive midfielder will hurt them badly. The fans want the club to fill the void left by Fabinho, but there has been little to no progress in the Lavia deal.
It remains to be seen whether Liverpool comes up with something surprising in the upcoming days.
