Aston Villa Finally Back in Europe
Finally, after over a decade of being absent from European competition, Aston Villa are back. When Villa limped out of the Europa League back in the 2010/11 season to Rapid Vienna, a lot of fans took the competition for granted. The loss was fairly easy to shake off, after all, the league was the team’s “bread and butter”. For the following 11 years though, such a diet left Villa supporters malnourished, until Unai Emery came into B6 to serve up a more continental menu.
Despite being the third tier UEFA tournament, the Europa Conference League, now in its third season, has provided genuine excitement for the supporters of the teams in it. Without the usual suspects around to scoop up the trophy at the end, it means there’s legitimate competition and the promise of an actual opportunity to win it.
Villa will no doubt start out as one of the tournaments favourites due to the financial muscle of the Premier League. The disparity in finances has no clearer example than how they stack up against their play-off opponents Hibernian.
In the first episode of the My Old Man Said podcast‘s Europavision, a show dedicated to Villa’s European campaign this season, we focus on the financial differences of the teams over the years and look at some of Hibernian’s signings. We’ll also look at the players who have played for both teams, before looking at Edinburgh as an away day.
Please follow the My Old Man Said podcast on whatever podcast app you use, to get notifications for when the next Europavision show releases. Hopefully, you’ll be listening to them all the way to the end of the season. If you do, it’ll mean that Villa have made it to Athens for the final!
Villa Line-up vs Hibernian
First things first, a particularly tricky tie at Easter Road in the away leg of the play-off round against Hibs.
By the looks of the team, especially with the inclusion of Emi Martinez, Emery is very much in the Europa Conference League to win it!
Villa’s team for Hibernian: Martinez, Konsa, Carlos, Torres, Digne, Bailey, Kamara, Luiz, McGinn, Diaby, Watkins.
