Saturday evening sees Palace welcome Nottingham Forest back to Selhurst. Ahead of the match, I caught up with Duncan Lanser to see how Forest fans are feeling and what to expect from the ‘tricky trees.’
TEB – Duncan, how is the season going so far? What’s the ambition for the rest of the season?
DL – Overall, we have to be happy that we are relatively competitive, more so than at this stage last season, and holding firm just below mid-table. The away win at Chelsea was a highlight. We’ve had a couple of slightly disappointing draws at home, and it was a shame we didn’t get something at Old Trafford when we were 2-0 up after 5 minutes but still lost the game!
We want some consistency this season and crucially, much better away form. We will still rely heavily on getting the results at the City ground. Of course, it would be nice to see us playing with more fluidity and cohesion, such as the winning goal at Stamford Bridge.
TEB – Who’s your star performer?
DL – Has to be Gibbs-White – what a talent! When he didn’t play against Brentford last weekend, we really missed his creativity. He can give the ball away at times as he’s trying to be so dynamic, but he is so often our key creative force. Hopefully he might get a chance in the England setup at some point this season.
A shout also for Willy Boly as an unsung hero. He’s had some massive games at the back already this season, especially against Chelsea and last week against Brentford. When he was injured, it was noticeable that we weren’t as sound at the back. Also, he provides experience and leadership that feels very important in our generally young and newly brought together team.
TEB – How do you think Forest will approach the game on Saturday?
DL – Our current away strategy is to concede possession and pack the defence while looking to hit quick counter attacks on transition. Possibly five at the back but including wing backs who will press forward at every opportunity.
TEB – Who are the current pantomime villains for Forest fans at the moment?
DL – Derby County! No matter how many leagues apart we are, they will always be our arch enemies. Goes back to the days when Brian Clough managed them then left to come to manage Forest, winning trophies with both clubs.
TEB – If you had a magic wand, which player from Palace would you like to steal?
DL – I really liked Eze last season but it might have to be Edouard this season given his fine finishing form so far. A good goal scorer is priceless!
TEB – Lastly, what’s your prediction for game
DL – Possibly a similarly close game, like last season, but with a couple of goals. I’ll go 1-1 with Elanga to score first.
TEB – Anything else?
DL – Looking forward to seeing if Aurier being appointed captain will bring out the best in him and if he can inspire the team moving forward.
TEB – Cheers Duncan!
