Well, that didn’t take long. Yesterday we wrote on news that Swansea City were considering making a second approach for Tottenham Hotspur Senior Assistant Coach Chris Davies. Today, according to the Evening Standard, Spurs have rejected an approach to speak with Davies, and are not willing to let him go.
You can certainly understand why. Davies was one of the candidates for the Swansea position this past summer before the Swans decided on the now-sacked Michael Duff. Davies is one of two coaches, along with Ryan Mason, responsible for implementing Ange Postecoglou’s offensive tactics. He’s a young coach on the rise and is probably destined for a head coaching position somewhere… but not quite yet.
One would think that Spurs rejecting Swansea from having the opportunity to speak with Davies was done with Davies’ permission and approval. I guess we don’t know that for certain, but I suspect if Davies was truly interested in the Swansea job he would’ve made it clear to Tottenham leadership. Dan Kilpatrick writes that Postecoglou is “desperate not to lose a key member of his backroom team,” and that also probably sounds right. That said, the fact the rejection has come so quickly probably suggests that — at minimum — the club isn’t interested in letting Davies leave for a head coaching position midway through the season when that same team is 18th in the Championship. But maybe things will change in the summer? We’ll see.
