A shocking mistake from Emiliano Martinez saw Aston Villa make the worst possible start in Monday’s huge Premier League clash with Liverpool at villa Park.
Villa came into the game knowing a win would secure their place in next season’s Champions League and the fans were well and truly up for the occasion
However, the raucous crowd were quickly silenced as Martinez spilled Harvey Elliot’s tame cross from the right into his own net in the second minute.
The Villa stopper tried desperately to claw the ball out as it trickled towards the goal but only succeeded in knocking it on its way.
It was a game which Arsenal fans were hoping Liverpool would win as it would leave Tottenham with hopes of qualifying for Europe’s premier competition when they face Man City on Tuesday night.

Emiliano Martinez (right) inadvertently turned Harvey Elliot’s tame cross into his own net
Martinez could only watch as the ball trickled into the net to give Liverpool an early lead
And former Gunners keeper Martinez did his old club a favour with the shocking mistake.
Fortunately for Martinez it didn’t take too long for parity to be restored as Youri Tielemans found the net just 10 minutes later.
However, the Reds soon reclaimed the lead as Cody Gakpo turned home from close range.
