Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne picked up an ankle injury during the 2-0 win over Spurs on Tuesday night.
The Belgian international was replaced by Jeremy Doku just before the 70th-minute mark at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, following a tackle from Pape Matar Sarr and, speaking after the match, manager Pep Guardiola said that the player was unable to continue:
“Kevin [De Bruyne] had a kick to the ankle and couldn’t run properly.”
It sounds like the 32-year-old picked up a knock more than anything else based on Guardiola’s remarks. There is an expectation that he will be available for City’s final game of the season this weekend but we will find out more in the coming days as we hear whether he has taken a full part in training.
Expected Return Date – Sunday 19th May v West Ham
Ederson was forced off the pitch at the exact same time as De Bruyne against Spurs.
It was originally reported that the Brazilian international had sustained a concussion but Guardiola clarified the situation following the game:
“He had a problem with his eye. He could not see properly so the doctor said I should change.”
Ederson‘s substitute Stefan Ortega came on and made a crucial save from Son Heung-min at 1-0 before Erling Haaland secured the points from the penalty spot in stoppage time. The German’s crucial stop could well turn out to be the defining moment in beating Arsenal to the Premier League title.
As for Ederson, it’s unlikely that he will be risked against West Ham at the Etihad this weekend if he is suffering issues with his vision. With the club having a more than capable understudy in Ortega, there is no need to take a chance on his fitness, even for such a big game.
