Former Manchester City and Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira says he has been really impressed with the performances of Phil Foden.
Speaking about England’s prospects at the European Championships, Vieira namechecked Foden as he explained why the Three Lions have a good chance of winning the tournament:
“Obviously, they have the quality of talented players to do it because I’m amazed by Phil Foden, what he’s been doing.”
It’s a ringing endorsement from Vieira, who is arguably one of the best players of the Premier League era.
Foden fully merits the praise he is receiving
The 24-year-old had an outstanding season for the Cityzens, scoring 27 goals and providing 12 assists in all competitions.
His performances led to him being named the Football Writers’ Association Football of the Year as well as the Premier League’s Player of the Season.
How will the City star fare at the Euros?
It’s fair to say that Foden didn’t have the best of times in England’s final warm-up game against Iceland last weekend. He has sometimes struggled to translate his club form to the international stage. In 34 caps, he has scored just 4 goals.
However, he did impress at the last World Cup and he is likely to be given a key role by Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate. With Jude Bellingham set to get the nod through the middle in the n0.10 role, and Bukayo Saka competing with Cole Palmer for a place on the right flank, it is expected that Foden will be deployed on the left wing.
With Southgate having decided to drop club teammate Jack Grealish from the squad, along with Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, Foden won’t have a lot of competition for his place. Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon will probably play second fiddle to him in Germany.
