Jack Grealish returned to training as England took to the pitch in their final group stage match against Slovenia on Tuesday evening.
The Manchester City star was one of a number of tournament stalwarts who Gareth Southgate opted not to take to Germany in a move which was viewed with some hesitation by a number of different voices.
Southgate admitted that the decision to axe a number of established England stars for reasons of fitness and form – including Harry Maguire and James Maddison – had been a hard one.
The England head coach called the conversations he had with the players to inform them they would be left out ‘one of the most difficult parts of the job’ and a ‘devastating blow’ to the players in question.
Grealish wasted no time jetting away from England, taking in a trip to Sardinia during a brief holiday, but has since decided to take to the pitch once again in a bid to return to form next season.

The Manchester City player was put through his paces by a Nike trainer he has previously worked with, Jamie Reynolds
The 28-year-old shared a video of himself training at the Etihad Campus on Tuesday via his Instagram Stories, going through individual drills with a Nike trainer, Jamie Reynolds.
Grealish has previously worked on individual training programmes with the instructor, with Reynolds working with the star ahead of the last campaign on a private programme in Dubai.
The trainer in turn reposted the session to his own profile, captioning the video: ‘(Jack Grealish) back in the office’.
Another video of the midfielder shared by Reynolds showed the pitch where Grealish had been working with the caption: ‘(Jack Grealish) working (runner emoji, football emoji).’
Before returning to Manchester, Grealish also fit in a training session at Juventus’ academy while on Italian soil to ensure he is prepared ahead of joining up with Pep Guardiola’s side for pre-season.

Manchester City will get their tour of the United States underway against Celtic on July 23.
While Grealish was being put through his paces, Southgate may have found himself in need of some of the player’s verve and creativity in Germany as England limped to a 0-0 draw in Cologne.
Finishing at the top of their group will be cold comfort for the Three Lions ahead of their Round of 16 tie, with roiling criticism of the head coach likely to only intensify after the side failed to break the deadlock against the group’s minnows.
