Bristol Rovers will next season continue their journey in League One, ending 15th last season. We have looked up previous players and other names in football that has a life in both camps, Leicester and Bristol Rovers.
Ian Holloway had a number of good years at the club, both as player and manager. He played for The Pirates in three rounds, first from 1980 to 1985 (111/15), then returning in 1987, playing until 1991 (179/26). His last and final period at the club was from 1996 to 1999 (107/1), serving first as player manager and until 2001, building a reputation in the game, giving him a lot of special moments in management, also having a stormy short period at Leicester, seeing them relegated to League One.
A few years before Ian Holloway took charge, Dennis Rofe was the manager at Bristol Rovers, from October 1991 to November 1992. Ray Graydon has also been in both camps, as a player and manager at Bristol Rovers, at Leicester he was in a coaching capacity.
In 2004, Russel Osman took temporary charge of The Pirates. He lasted a month, before stepping down. In 2011, Stuart Campbell appeared in an interim period, moving on from a player career, that he started at Leicester, playing 37 league games, and then becoming a legend at Memorial Ground, playing 288 league games for The Pirates from 2004 to 2011. Mark McGhee came next having the job as manger for Bristol Rovers from January 2012 to December the same year.
Conrad Logan had a long lasting time at Leicester and in that period he was on loan at Bristol Rovers in 2011, playng 16 league games. Ryan Loft is the latest recruit to be accounted to both clubs, but never played first team league football at Leicester, joining Bristol Rovers in 2022, moving to Port Vale in 2023, adding up 50 league appearances, scoring 5 goals.
Jamie Clapham, Tony Sealy and Nicky Platnauer are three other players who had careers in both camps. Platnauer starting his league career with Bristol Rovers in 1982-83, before joining Coventry. He played for Leicester from 1991 to 1993, adding up 35 league appearances. Tony Sealy was late in his career playing for Bristol Rovers. Playing for the Pirates from 1989 to 1991, at Leicester from 1985 to 1987. Clapham spent time on loan at Bristol Rovers while on the books at Spurs. He later joined Leicester for a short period in 2008.
Bob Lee was a top goalscorer in league football during the 70’s and 80’s, starting his career at Leicester Once a major sale from Leicester to Sunderland for a fee of £200.000, playing at Roker Park from 1976 to 1980, before taking the trip down to Bristol Rovers, playing 23 league games, before having a new move to Carlisle.
A grand legend from the past, Hugh Adcock, moved from Leicester to Bristol Rovers in 1935. He had then played 434 league games for Leicester and scored 51 goals. When leaving he was 32 year of age and only completed 13 league games before he decided to return to the Leicester area and later settled in retirement.
Barry Hayles is another forward with a long life in the game, playing non-league until last season, when he at the age of 51, played 12 league games for Windsor at level 9 to 10. Hayles had a fantastic career and early on playing for Bristol Rovers, 1997 to 1998, 32 league goals in 62 games. Later at Leicester from 2008 to 2009, scoring 2 goals in 28 league games.
Also worth mentioning is Tom Parkes who joined Bristol Rovers from Leicester in 2012, being with The Pirates to 2016, adding a total of 175 league games, scoring 6 goals. He has later had a journey in English lower leagues and also represented Livingston in Scotland.
