Much has been said about who should take the reins at England when Gareth Southgate finally steps down. Several big names have been bandied about – and Manchester United icon Teddy Sheringham thinks that there would be no one better for the role than Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola.
While Sheringham understands how unrealistic of a prospect this is, given Guardiola’s lack of experience in international coaching, he remains his top pick. He said he would ‘break the bank’ to secure the Spainiard’s signature.
Additionally, he thinks that the FA could ‘realistically afford it’. It is unclear how accurate this claim is – however, according to One Football, Guardiola earns a salary of £379,000 a week at City. This is a disputed figure, but all audiences are in agreement that Guardiola earns a mammoth wage at the Etihad Stadium.
Regardless, Guardiola would most likely be an excellent appointment for the Three Lions. England have an array of young, talented attacking players in their ranks – and Guardiola is an expert in getting the best out of his forwards. He has coached stars such as Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski and Sergio Aguero in the past, all of whom enjoyed their best years under the tutelage of the 53-year-old.
What did Teddy Sheringham say about Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola potentially getting the England job?
Speaking to Online Poker, Sheringham said: “If I were in the FA and given the choice, I’d break the bank for Pep Guardiola. I don’t know whether he’d like to take the job – if he was given the opportunity he’d probably have a stab at the Spain job, although they seem to be in a good place with Luis de la Fuente at the moment.
“We’ve obviously never seen him manage a national side before, but he’s worth taking the risk on. He’d be my pick to replace Gareth Southgate – the FA could realistically afford it, so what’s there to lose?”
