Manchester City have made an “approach” to Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, according to the Gazzetta Dello Sport.
The Italian publication reports that the Premier League champions are looking for potential replacements for Ederson, who looks set to make a move to Al-Ittihad.
Donnarumma has less than two years left on his contract at PSG and, while an extension has been discussed, his future at the Parc des Princes is in doubt, especially after the arrival of Matvey Safonov from Krasnodor.
The Gazzetta Dello Sport claim that Donnarumma, who has been capped 66 times by Italy, is now “weighing” up all of his options, with a transfer to City having not been ruled out.
What is the situation with Ederson?
Trusted sources have confirmed that the 30-year-old has already agreed a switch to Al-Ittihad. Like Donnarumma, he has less than two years left on his current deal and it appears he has accepted a lucrative offer from the Middle East.
It is now down to Al-Ittihad and City to negotiate the transfer fee. A price in excess of £40m will be demanded, which should not be an issue for a team that are funded by Saudi’s Public Investment Fund.
City could sign a No. 2 instead
While there has been speculation that the Cityzens will go all out to recruit a replacement for Ederson, with AC Milan’s Mike Maignan having been linked before the rumours about Donnarumma, there is also a possibility that Stefan Ortega will be handed the gloves.
The German has signed a contract extension on the proviso that he would get more game time so it would make more sense if the replacement for Ederson was an understudy. At the moment, though, there is no certainty as to which direction City will go.
