After Bayern Munich’s 4-0 win over Grasshopper Club Zürich, club board member for sport, Max Eberl, hit the media to give an update on the story that has captured much of the attention for Bayern Munich fans so far this week — the status of midfielder Leon Goretzka.
Goretzka, who turned in a very good effort while playing as a center-back vs. Grasshopper Club Zürich, has been told by the team that is no longer wanted to needed, but things could be changing in the wake of the injury to Josip Stanišić.
Per Eberl (as captured by Bild journalist Michel Schröer), Goretzka will not be exiled if he stays — he will be on the team for training and games: “If he stays, he will be a full member of the squad.”
Eberl offered a little more to Sky Sport journalist Kerry Hau and gave a bit more insight as o what Goretzka staying might look like: “At Bayern Munich there’s no second training group. Leon is a great player and played well today. If he stays he will be a full member of our squad.”
Finally, Abendzeitung’s Maximilian Koch captured Eberl talking about how the club has never really wanted to make this situation difficult for Goretzka: “We never spoke badly about Leon. He has done great things for FC Bayern. Competitive situations are quite normal in football. Leon is a full member of the team. We only hinted that it could be difficult.”
What does this all mean? Well, the Bavarians still probably want to sell Goretzka, but the Stanišić situation has made things complicated. Goretzka can provide depth in the central midfield and at center-back if needed, which could help Vincent Kompany if other injuries start to pile up.
