Big chances are coming to the Germany men’s national team midfield.
After a rejuvenating EURO 2024 campaign on home soil, new head coach Julian Nagelsmann will have to come up with new solutions to an XI that loses two huge figures: former Real Madrid maestro Toni Kroos and FC Barcelona star İlkay Gündoğan.
Gündoğan captained the side at the tournament, having been elevated over Bayern Munich keeper Manuel Neuer in the latter’s injury absence, meaning it is also a leadership void.
According to Sky Sport journalist Kerry Hau, it is Bayern’s Joshua Kimmich — already the vice captain at EURO 2024 — who appears to be the heir apparent to the captain’s armband:
©️ After Ilkay Gündogan’s resignation, Joshua Kimmich is a hot candidate for the DFB captain’s armband! The FC Bayern professional was already Gündogan’s first deputy at the home European Championship. @SkySportDE
Could Kimmich be stepping into the Germany captaincy — as well as back into midfield?
