Manchester City fullback Kyle Walker believes his team should be motivated to win a fifth consecutive top-division title.
Pep Guardiola’s side secured their fourth championship win in succession last season, which has never been achieved before in English football history, and Walker wants to become history-makers once again this campaign:
“This is the best league in the world that everyone wants to compete in. To win five-in-a-row, look at the Manchester United teams that there have been, they’ve not been able to do four-in-a-row. We’ve ticked a box there, why can’t we do five?”
“Four-in-a-row, no one has ever done it, no one has ever done five… That should be the desire. We’re coming here to compete, the team to beat, and people want to take our crown. So we have to show a little bit of arrogance, but we need to show a bit of humble [sic]…”
Walker has warned his teammates that it won’t be easy to secure the Premier League title once again, as he believes both Arsenal and Liverpool could challenge City:
“We need to be humble as well; Arsenal are getting very close now, other teams are going to be there or thereabouts. There’s a very good Liverpool I watched against Ipswich, but we’re the reigning PL champions, hopefully, we can retain it.”
City will need to strengthen their squad before August 30th
The departure of Julian Alvarez and the injury sustained by Oscar Bobb means that manager Pep Guardiola doesn’t have as many options as he did last season.
Squad depth is crucial if you want to compete at the top of the Premier League so fans are hoping that additional reinforcements will be brought in ahead of deadline day next week.
A proven winner is set to return to the Etihad
It looks as though Ilkay Gundoan is poised to rejoin the club, a year after leaving the Etihad on a free transfer. At the time of writing, his arrival hasn’t been officially announced but his experience could prove invaluable.
Gundogan may not be the only new signing. A replacement for Alvarez is also being sought, and reports suggest that a move for Celtic’s Kyogo Furuhashi is being explored.
