Gundogan was Pep Guardiola‘s first signing for Manchester City, arriving from Borussia Dortmund in 2016. Over his seven-year tenure in Manchester, the former German international made 304 appearances, scored 60 goals, and provided 37 assists. During this period, the 33-year-old won 14 trophies with The Cityzens, including five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and the UEFA Champions League. Notably, Gundogan captained the historic treble-winning side during the 2022/23 season.

In the summer of 2023, Gundogan expressed his desire for a new challenge and left the Etihad Stadium as a legend, moving to Barcelona on a free transfer. The German made 51 appearances for the Blaugrana last season. However, with the arrival of new manager Hansi Flick, Gundogan was informed that he no longer had a place in the team. When the opportunity arose for Gundogan to return to City, Guardiola quickly said ‘yes,’ and Barcelona agreed to let him leave on a free transfer despite two years remaining on his contract.
Gundogan has rejoined Manchester City on an initial one-year deal, with an option to extend for a further year depending on his appearances this season. He will wear the number 19 shirt.
Gundogan delighted to rejoin Manchester City
Expressing his delight at rejoining City, Gundogan said: “My seven years at Manchester City were a time of pure contentment for me, both on and off the pitch. I grew as a person and a player, developed a special relationship with the City fans, and enjoyed amazing success. It was an exceptional period in my life. To have the opportunity to return here means so much.
“Everyone knows the respect I have for Pep – he is the best manager in the world, and working with him every day makes you a better player. You feel constantly challenged, which for any professional is exactly what you want. I cannot wait to work with him again.
“And what can I say about my teammates here at City? They are world-class footballers. I am genuinely delighted to have the chance to train and play alongside them. Honestly, I cannot wait to wear the City shirt again.”
It is wonderful to see Gundogan back in a Man City jersey and he will no doubt play a big part in City’s quest for a record extending fifth consecutive Premier League trophy.
