Manchester United suffered a late 2-1 defeat at Brighton after one of the more unusual offside incidents in recent memory.
Joao Pedro bagged a last-minute winner after United forward Amad Diallo had cancelled out Danny Welbeck’s opener for the Seagulls.
However, the defining moment came when Alejandro Garnacho had a goal correctly ruled out in the closing stages.
The substitute was presented with an open goal but smashed his effort against a sliding Joshua Zirkzee, who connected with the ball on the goalline.
Zirkzee was in an offside position and a VAR review showed he got the final touch.
The potential winner was subsequently ruled out with United boss Erik ten Hag left furious on the touchline.
Reacting on commentary for talkSPORT, ex-Premier League striker Darren Bent said: “Garnacho must be thinking, ‘Why didn’t I just put it in the empty net?'”
They were left to rue the incident – and some shocking defending – when Pedro was found unmarked at the back post in injury time.
Any one of three players could have converted Simon Adingra’s cross with eight United players seemingly unaware of danger at the back post.
Bent said: “Not one Man United player is looking behind them. That is really poor.”
More to follow.
