Ex-Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino believes Manchester City forward Savinho is up there with the best wingers in English football.
The Brazilian international only arrived at the club from Troyes for an initial £21m back in July but, writing in his column for The Times, Cascarino said he saw enough during City’s opening day victory at Stamford Bridge to suggest that Savinho will be a success at his new club:
“What a joy it was to watch him running at Chelsea’s defence on his Premier League debut, sending defenders falling to the floor. He already looks like a great signing.”
Cascarino even went as far as to say that Savinho is among the top five wingers currently playing in the Premier League.
Savinho has been compared to some outstanding players
The four other wingers that Cascarino mentions in his Times column are Liverpool’s Mo Salah, Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma and Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho.
Whether Savinho will actually match the achievements of some of those names, we shall have to wait and see. He needs to produce the goods on a regular basis for his club first and foremost. However, his game has already been likened to former City star Riyad Mahrez, with the Algerian noticing the similarities himself.
Guardiola has been impressed by his start at City
Of course, the Brazilian would be wise to shut out the noise from fans and pundits, even if he is receiving plenty of plaudits. At the end of the day, the only opinion that really matters is his manager’s.
Speaking after the win over Ipswich at the weekend, Pep Guardiola said that Savinho “played really well”. If he continues on the same trajectory, he could be a mainstay of City’s starting eleven for years to come.
