Sometimes, work friends drift apart when they find different jobs. Sometimes they lose contact. Or sometimes one work friend becomes the other’s boss. Admittedly, the latter is extremely rare but that is exactly what happened with Leroy Sané and Vincent Kompany, who were teammates at Manchester City before Kompany retired in 2019. 5 years later, they have been rescued from the oily grip of Manchester and reunited at Bayern Munich.
Leroy Sané is “delighted” by this development, which he confessed to Bayern’s official website: “I was delighted the first time I met him again. He’s a great guy,” revealed Sané. “I’ve also now experienced how well he conducts training. The coaches all have great energy, Vincent Kompany has real charisma.”
Not everybody can suddenly stomach taking orders from a former work buddy, but for Sané it is not about the hierarchy or his ego, but about success this season, which serves a fitting ending to his interview: “We absolutely have to win the league again. But another aim is to win the DFB Cup. I haven’t won that with Bayern yet, so it’s right at the top of my list – and of course the Champions League!”
Winning these titles would be sweet. As Leroy Sané nears his return to fitness following a groin surgery, the thought of winning will be at the forefront of the former Schalke player’s mind. And it will be up to Kompany to keep it there.
