In his inaugural Nations League match, Germany manager Julian Naglesmann led his team to a 5-0 win over Hungary. Germany overwhelmed the opponent with 23 shots and Hungarian goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi only managed three saves. Despite the one-sided affair and a perfect performance from Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala, Germany only led 1-0 at the halftime break.
In his postgame interview (via @iMiaSanMia), Julian Nagelsmann said “I thought the start of the game, first 5-10 minutes, we were a bit sloppy and had some misplaced passes. After that we were very dominant, had good control and created many chances. We should have scored more goals in the first half. We should develop a killer instinct to decide games earlier. The chemistry in the team is there and as long as that’s the case we can always improve.”
Following the international retirements of Manuel Neuer, Thomas Müller, Toni Kroos, and İlkay Gündoğan, Naglesmann is searching for leaders to carry the torch for Germany. Awarding the captaincy to Joshua Kimmich certainly helps, but right now it feels like Germany’s success hinges heavily on the performances of youngsters Musiala and Florian Wirtz.
