It is not always on the up and up.
That is a lesson Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala knows too well, having endured recent seasons of adversity with the Rekordmeister. With the German men’s national team, the trajectory has been mostly positive of late — which makes Tuesday’s 2-2 draw on the road vs. the Netherlands a setback of sorts.
Even if it was just the Nations League.
The 21-year-old struck a circumspect tone after the match.
“They had their chances, we had our chances. It’s a process,” Musiala said in remarks captured via @iMiaSanMia. “We have to take it game by game and get better. Today not everything worked like against Hungary [against whom Germany won 5-0 on Saturday]. We have to take steps forward in the next games. We have to be more secure with the ball and convert our chances. But there are also positives to take. The atmosphere in the team is good and we’re enjoying being on the pitch.”
The youngster is stepping ever more into a leading role on the pitch both for club and country — leading a German attacking line alongside Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen), Kai Havertz (Arsenal FC), and Deniz Undav (VfB Stuttgart). And though the Germans conceded twice, it could have been more had it not been for Musiala’s own heroic efforts tracking back and making last-ditch defensive interventions — at once point celebrated ferociously by team captain and right-back Joshua Kimmich.
For now, it is back to club football for Musiala, who returns to action with Bayern Munich on Saturday at Holstein Kiel. Germany’s next match in UEFA Nations League Group A action will be at Bosnia and Herzegovina on October 11th.
