Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann just might have some soul-searching to do before the next international period.
Germany did not play badly, but Netherlands will be the happier of the two teams after a 2-2 draw in Nations League Group A action at the Johan Cruyff Arena. The Dutch were out-posessed but handily deserved their goals. Nagelsmann adjusted, personnel and tactics, and will have to wonder which was more lacking on the day.
Now for some quick hitters:
- Where’s Kai Havertz’s shooting boots?
- What was the linesman doing on that offside call? Havertz’s breakaway in the second half came to nothing but he was onside by a mile.
- Hitting the deck: from attack to defense, the Netherlands gave Germany more muscle than it could handle. From forward Maximilian Beier to defender Nico Schlotterbeck, German players got wrestled to the turf.
- Tah will get more of the attention after his half-time substitution but Schlotterbeck did not look his best, either. Tough day for both German center-backs.
- The season is still early and club form between now and October will be something to watch. Nagelsmann opted against making big changes to his EURO 2024 squad this time — but opportunity is knocking for players on the bubble.
