After a solid shutout performance against Hungary over the weekend, Jonathan Tah earned another start for Germany against the Netherlands but with a much different result. Germany gave up an early goal to Tijjani Reijnders and struggled to contain the Dutch attack for most of the evening. The game eventually settled at a draw but was uneasy for both teams throughout the match.
Tah, a potential transfer target for Bayern Munich, has worked his way up the pyramid for Germany and Julian Nagelsmann but has continued to struggle against the elite opponents for both club and country. After a poor first half, Nagelsmann opted to substitute Tah at halftime and bring on Borussia Dortmund’s Waldemar Anton.
In his postgame interview (via @iMiaSanMia), Nagelsmann said, “[Tah] made 4-5 fouls in the first half. I was afraid he would get a second yellow card. We didn’t want to take any risks.”
While each item is technically true, the fact remains that the starting center-back spot opposite Antonio Rüdiger at the 2026 World Cup is up for grabs between Tah, Anton, and Nico Schlotterbeck.
