Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt believes that Lille star Angel Gomes has the ability to play for Manchester City.
The 24-year-old came through United’s academy (where Butt coached him), before leaving for Lille in 2020 and, speaking about the player’s potential, Butt said:
“He could play in the Premier League easily. He could play for City tomorrow. When Angel left United, I said to him ‘you’re going to go on and have an unbelievable career and I wouldn’t be surprised if you end up playing against Manchester United for Barcelona or Real Madrid in the next five, six, seven years’, because he was that good. And I’m not just saying that now that he’s made his England debut, I genuinely thought that a long time ago.”
Gomes made his first senior appearance for the Three Lions during the 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland earlier this month. He was then given a start by manager Lee Carsley in the second Nations League fixture against Finland, impressing pundits and fans alike with his performance.
The midfielder’s contract expires next summer
Gomes will be out of contract at the end of this season and, due to the fact that he is a homegrown player, multiple Premier League clubs will be pursuing his signature.
Considering his talent, it would not be a complete surprise if City were also contemplating a move for him, although they do have other targets in mind.
City are keeping close tabs on Musiala
While Gomes may well be on the Premier League champions’ radar, their main target to strengthen in midfield is believed to be Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala.
The German international is also nearing the end of his contract, although his current deal does have an additional year left to run until 2026.
