Manchester City fan favourite Richard Dunne has recently lavished praise on Citizens ace Jack Grealish, describing the 29 year old as a ‘great player’.
Dunne expressed his shock that Grealish was left out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024 – furthermore, he says it ‘wasn’t a shock’ to him when he learned that Lee Carsley had brought the Aston Villa academy graduate back into the Three Lions fold.
Despite this, Dunne is also aware of the competition that Grealish faces in England’s attacking ranks. He must compete with stars such as Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka and Cole Palmer – nailing down a spot in the starting XI is no mean feat at the moment.
Dunne spent nine years with City, making 296 Premier League appearances and scoring seven goals along the way. Grealish, meanwhile, has made 76 league appearances for the Sky Blues and has scored 11 goals in England’s top division while representing Pep Guardiola’s men.
What did Richard Dunne have to say about Manchester City ace Jack Grealish?
Speaking in an interview with BetVictor, Dunne said: “For me, Jack Grealish being called back to the England squad wasn’t a surprise. It was more of a surprise when he wasn’t in the squad for the Euros.
“He’s a great player and he can add so much to the England side. He played in a slightly different position against Ireland, showcasing the talent that he has, to be able to drift around the pitch and receive the ball anywhere.
“He’s a player that no defender wants to come up against because of his skill and his ability to glide past them. England are fortunate to have so many talented players in those attacking areas, there are so many different combinations there. It must be a real treat for the manager. Whether it be Grealish, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden or Bukayo Saka, Carsley knows he’s got a top player there.”
