Premier League leaders Manchester City have once again been linked with a move for Celtic ace Kyogo Furuhashi as they look to find a replacement for Julian Alvarez.
This comes via a report from journalist Peter O’Rourke on the Inside Track Podcast. He revealed that Furuhashi was ‘talked about’ by members of the Sky Blues’ recruitment team and that their interest in the player still persists.
The Citizens had been linked with a move for Furuhashi in the summer transfer window, but a move ultimately failed to materialise as he remained in place at Celtic Park beyond the deadline.
What would Kyogo Furuhashi bring to Manchester City?
Furuhashi is a multi faceted attacking player. He is an adept creator, but is also no slouch when it comes to goal scoring. Since he joined Celtic in 2021, the Japanese international has found the back of the net on 54 occasions over the course of 99 Scottish Premiership appearances.
He hasn’t been at his best thus far this season – he has notched up one goal and one assist in five games. Last season, he scored 11 goals and notched up four assists in 33 Scottish Premiership encounters.
At 29 years of age, Furuhashi is currently operating at the peak of his powers. He will not be in his prime forever – if City do not sucessfully sign him in January, they may be better off exploring other options.
Furthermore, Pep Guardiola is ‘not desperate’ to bolster his attacking options. With superstars such as Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland to call upon, it is not a priority for his team as things stand.
In addition to this, if City do decide to launch an effort to sign Furuhashi, he will be little more than a rotation option – he is not going to unseat Haaland in the number nine role. At Celtic, he is a star – at City, he would be a bench player.
