It was a pretty good week for Bayern Munich. The club came out of the weekend with a huge win, and they enter the UEFA Champions League without any injuries. It’s tough to beat that.
Leon Goretzka
By far the biggest story to me this week is what is currently going on with Leon Goretzka. I know that during the Thomas Tuchel mistake era a large number of Bayern fans wanted somebody to blame for the club’s misfortunes, and they settled in Leon.
I still think he happens to be one of the three best central midfielders at the club; however, I don’t mind when people disagree with me.
I also think that your head coach, in this case Vincent Kompany, does get to decide what squad wants to take to every match. It’s totally his prerogative. Still, it is a bit rich that the club continues to try to act like Goretzka’s banishment is solely down the performance. I know it’s not. You know it’s not. Goretzka knows it’s not. Kompany knows it’s not. Eberl knows it’s not. Konrad Laimer certainly knows it’s not.
I really hope this gets sorted out and soon. The club wants him gone. He wants to stay. They’re determined to try and embarrass him to get their way. This isn’t fun.
The big win against Kiel
Bayern picked up a massive 6-1 victory this weekend when the Bundesliga returned from the international break. It was a blitz early with the Bavarians jumping out to a 3-0 lead after only 13 minutes. They never looked back.
No, this isn’t an earth-shattering win. Bayern were expected to win this game. The team had to go out and earn it though. The mark of a championship winning team is always the team that wins the games they’re supposed to win and draws the games they’re supposed to lose.
We’re off to a great start. Let’s keep it up.
The new Champions League is dumb
The season is officially back with the return of Europe competition, but let’s not beat around the bush: the new format sucks and is stupid.
Yeah, it’s great that we get to see Bayern back facing a classic European club like Dinamo Zagreb, but don’t let anybody fool you that this new competition is structured in a good way. Going away from the structured eight groups of four teams is only going to let the big clubs coalesce even more power in the game.
I hate it.
