On the opening night of the Champions League’s new “league phase” Bayern Munich obliterated Dinamo Zagreb, 9-2. On the second night, Celtic thrashed Slovan Bratislava, 5-1.
The betting favorites, Manchester City and Real Madrid, only scored three goals combined. Bayern and Celtic handled that easily in the second half alone.
Does this mean that the Bayern and Celtic are destined to collide in the Champions League final this season? According to Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, both clubs should just skip straight to the final.

Rodgers is obviously joking, although there doesn’t seem to be anybody laughing in the video besides Rodgers. Between his stints at Liverpool, and Celtic, Rodgers has never won more than a single Champions League match within a year. It would be quite a magical run if Celtic made it all the way to the Allianz Arena for the 2025 final.
As for Bayern, they’ll have to settle for being at the top of the table after the first matchday.
