O’zapft is! Oktoberfest season is in full swing as of Saturday September 21st in what is well and truly one of the best times of the year on the Bavarian calendar. Bayern Munich’s annual team visit to the Paulaner wiesn in Theresienwiese takes place on the 22nd, which comes after the Bundesliga match at Werder Bremen. Win, draw, or lose, Bayern’s traditional visit to the wiesn during the Oktoberfest season dates back decades along with their traditional lederhosen Paulaner photoshoot – the same style of clothing the players and staff wear to the wiesn visit.
The visit is always made that much better on the back end of a win in the Bundesliga for Bayern, but it takes place either way. There have certainly been visits after disappointing results, but for Vincent Kompany, he’ll be hoping the mood will be a bit like it was last season around the same time. The team had their visit on the backend of beating Manchester United 4-3 in the Champions League midweek and then thrashing VfL Bochum 7-0 in the Bundesliga – two massive wins capped off with good bier, goo company, and incredible local fare.
Looking ahead to the traditional Bavarian weekend, Kompany is very much looking forward to the opportunity to take part in something that holds so much historical and cultural value to Bavaria, but he will not, for one second, be looking past Werder Bremen.
“We want to experience the culture as a family. Oktoberfest is very important, not just for the people from Munich. We are looking forward to it, but in the next 24 hours it’s all about Werder. On Sunday I’m looking forward to going to Oktoberfest with the family and FC Bayern,” the Belgian manager explained in the press conference ahead of the Breme clash (via @iMiaSanMia).
After the visit, they will have just under a week to prepare for next weekend’s massive Bundesliga clash against reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen. Between now and the middle of October, it will be one of the few instances where Bayern does not have an English week on either side of the next international break.
