When Bayern Munich decided to move on from Thomas Tuchel last season, most of the attention generated for the club’s coaching search was focused on Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, who has transformed Die Werkself into a juggernaut.
Alonso ultimately decided to stay put and the Bavarians hired Vincent Kompany. Even with that kind of history, Kompany is not feeling the pressure to prove anything.
“No, not at all. My motivation is that Leverkusen were champions last season and are now coming to the Allianz Arena. We’re top of the table and have the chance to do something for our fans. It’s completely normal in this business to have candidates for the job. It’s not about having any kind of ego. Not at all. I’m here for the team. I’m having great fun here. I work very hard and want to earn everything. Everything else isn’t important to me. I like to see others have success when they get the maximum out of themselves, because I know how tough it is. I want to do my thing and will do all I can for it,” said Kompany (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “As a coach you always look to see who is doing something new, something special. And (Alonso) did that with his team last season. That’s what makes the game interesting. They’re coming here, we get the chance to compete. That’s when football can become special.”
Kompany’s start to this campaign has been special, but it needs a signature victory. Could this be the one?
