Ex-Spurs scout unhappy with Gary Neville’s comments on Dejan Kulusevski after the Manchester City game
Tottenham Hotspur had a weekend to remember as they rocked to the Etihad Stadium and smashed Manchester City 4-0 in the Premier League.
After returning from the international break, the North Londoners needed to respond to their previous shock defeat to newly promoted Ipswich Town and they did more than that. For Ange Postecoglou, it was vital that he saw a much-needed improved performance from his team with several players stepping up.
While James Maddison grabbed the majority of the headlines due to his fantastic brace, a lot of Spurs’ good play went through Dejan Kulusevski. He set up Maddison’s opener with a brilliant piece of wing play and was also at the heart of plenty of Tottenham attacks against Pep Guardiola’s side.
And speaking of Dejan Kulusevski, he was singled out by Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville for some extra praise following the game. The former Manchester United star had acknowledged that big clubs will be monitoring the Sweden international following his classy display against Man City.
“This is a player that the likes of Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid begin to look at,” Neville said on Sky Sports (h/t Football London).
“I am not being disrespectful to Spurs, but that was the level of his performance and he has been like that for a while now. He was outstanding.”
Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King has lambasted Neville for his “unnecessary” comments about Kulusevski. He has stated Tottenham are a big club as well and advised the 24-year-old to stay focused on his game.
“I wouldn’t look into that statement any further than listening to it,” Bryan King exclusively told Tottenham News.
“Any player in the Premier League who performs consistently will generate interest. However, Tottenham are as big a football club as the majority of clubs who Kulusevski could put his name too.
“What is Neville an agent all of a sudden? Those comments are totally unnecessary, just let Kulusevski focus on what he is doing. He is finally starting to show that true potential.
“Not only was his use of the ball against City outstanding, but his work rate was outstanding as well. He was one of the better players against City. That is what we want to see from him in every game.”
King is right in calling out Neville for his needless comments on Kulusevski. Praising a player without linking him with European clubs can be done, something Neville needs to understand and learn. Certain pundits like the former Man United captain have continuously drummed up their scepticism and belittled Tottenham over the years.
Despite not winning a trophy for almost 17 years, Spurs remain a prestigious club in England. We have a rich history and that needs to be valued by everyone across the extensive spectrum of broadcast and print media. The club has played a vital role in shaping the futures of so many talented footballers.

No one is denying that Kulusevski’s performances aren’t watched across Europe but when he has finally started to show his true potential, it is a matter of showing respect. The Stockholm-born talent has been the club’s best player since being moved into a central role this season. He is a major part of the way Big Ange wants his team to press, create and attack.
Meanwhile, Kulusevski and Tottenham have some challenging fixtures coming up and they need to maintain complete focus regardless of these trivial noises and takes from biased pundits like Neville.
