There is no shortage of humble pie being dished out today after West Ham pulled off a shock 2-0 win at Newcastle.
Ahead of the Premier League clash at Newcastle United, West Ham and their manager were under huge pressure.
The Hammers were going to be lambs to the slaughter against an in-form Newcastle side who had beaten Chelsea, Arsenal and Forest on the spin.
And Julen Lopetegui was a dead man walking waiting to be handed his P45 by West Ham’s owners.
That was according to a host of pundit predictions ahead of West Ham’s trip to St James’s Park.
But this is West Ham United, a club that has always thrived as the underdog.
This is the Premier League where, especially this season, anything can happen.
West Ham were not given a single hope of a positive result against the Magpies.
The four big Premier League pundits who predict the outcome of matches each week summed it up perfectly.
West Ham literally laughed at by pundits ahead of Newcastle
Mark Lawrenson, Chris Sutton, Paul Merson and Sky Sports’ leading football analyst all had West Ham to lose at Newcastle.
Their predictions were for a combined aggregate loss of 11-2.
As far as they were all concerned there was no point in West Ham turning up.
Lawrenson said southern softies West Ham had no chance of turning Newcastle over.
Merson said anyone who thought the Hammers wouldn’t lose to Eddie Howe’s side is ‘delusional’.
Sutton and Sky Sports’ Lewis Jones said West Ham lacked any identity and that Lopetegui was failing to get a tune out of his players.
Come kick-off, though, they weren’t the only high profile names who had written the Hammers off.
Sneering Rodney Marsh and mocking Sky Sports pundits were completely embarrassed by West Ham at Newcastle.
Former Sky Sports pundit Marsh took to social media just over 25 minutes from kick-off with a cutting put down about the Irons.
Sneering Marsh and mocking pundits embarrassed by West Ham
“In other news: West Ham have zero chance to win tonight,” Marsh said on X.
Perhaps the former Fulham and Man City star had been watching Sky Sports’ totally negative pre-match build up?
Jamie Carragher, Theo Walcott and presenter Dave Jones tore into West Ham for the best part of an hour before the game.
In many respects they were only reiterating what most Hammers fans have been saying themselves this season.
But as supposed neutrals you would have expected a more considered approach from the broadcaster.
Carragher said he couldn’t see anything other than the Hammers ‘getting rolled over’.
Nothing summed up the coverage more than the last words between that trio before kick off.
Hammers dish out plenty of humble pie
Sky Sports were literally laughing in West Ham’s face when claiming the Hammers were absolute no-hopers for a result.
So much so they even clipped the moment and shared it on social media.
“Can you make a quick case for West Ham?” Jones asked Walcott as the players emerged from the tunnel.
“Er no, there you go, how quick is that?” Walcott responded as the three pundits burst out laughing.
For those watching at home those comments lit the blue touch paper.
What followed was simply glorious for so many reasons.
Goals from Tomas Soucek and Aaron Wan-Bissaka secured a deserved Hammers win after a brilliant away performance.
Words and mocking laughter were rammed down many an expert’s throat.
Marsh and Carragher were at least humble enough to make a joke of their pre-match statements.
Back on X, Marsh posted: “Terrific performance by West Ham, really fancied them to win tonight.”
Interviewing Hammers captain Jarrod Bowen after the game, Carragher made light of his earlier predictions.
“Well Jarrod a lot of people wrote you off tonight but certainly in the studio we were right behind you and had huge belief that West Ham would get the win,” Carragher said with his tongue firmly in his cheek.
There is one thing these so-called experts should know by now.
That is to never, ever write West Ham off.
Let your actions speak so loud that no one can hear the doubts anymore.
West Ham now need to find consistency and ensure they are the team being hyped up before games in the final two thirds of the season.
