West Ham are revelling in their shock 2-0 win at Newcastle United and it made for an awkward moment after the game.
The Hammers have not had much to shout about this season.
As a result, speculation had been rife that Julen Lopetegui would be sacked if West Ham suffered a heavy defeat at Newcastle.
That’s what the world and its wife was predicting too.
Understandably so given the contrasting form of West Ham and the Magpies going into Monday night’s Premier League clash.
Let’s have it right, nobody was giving the Hammers a hope in hell of getting a result.
So it made what transpired for Lopetegui’s side at Newcastle all the more enjoyable.
Tomas Soucek and Aaron Wan-Bissaka got the goals as West Ham recorded a deserved victory.
The win didn’t move West Ham up the table.
But it was a statement of intent and puts the Hammers just four points off sixth-placed Spurs.
West Ham’s performance was so good it was hard to pick out one player for man of the match.
West Ham dish out humble pie with win at Newcastle
Carlos Soler, Wan-Bissaka, Lucas Paqueta and Jarrod Bowen were all strong shouts.
West Ham’s £26m summer capture Crysencio Summerville was magnificent too.
The flying Dutchman constantly had the Magpies on the back foot.
It was his pace, direct running and skill which made a huge difference to how West Ham could approach the game.
Defeat is a big setback for Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.
The Englishman was coming under a bit of pressure before his side managed to string together three wins on the bounce ahead of the West Ham clash.
Lopetegui went into the game as the manager facing the most pressure in the Premier League.
Some of that weight has now been shifted onto the shoulders of Howe, though.
Especially being the manager of the world’s richest club and the expectation that comes with that.
Some fantastic images and video has emerged from the clash.
West Ham making pundits eat their words – and mocking laughter – with as ruthless an away performance as you will see.
Painfully awkward moment involving Summerville and Howe
The Hammers themselves have captured a brilliant moment on camera too – if you’re West Ham that is.
There was a painfully awkward moment involving Summerville and Howe after the shock West Ham win at Newcastle.
When West Ham get a positive result, the club releases footage from behind the scenes.
While filming that content, West Ham’s media team waited in the tight St James’s Park tunnel to record the reactions of their players as they went back to the dressing room.
Some were respectfully muted, others were loud and proud.
None more so than Summerville.
The brilliant former Leeds winger could not hide his delight as he walked down the tunnel.
Soucek whispered a quiet ‘Yes’ and pumped a fist as he went past.
Soler went a bit louder with a cry of ‘Come on’.
Then Summerville pumped both arms in the air and shouted ‘Come on’ while laughing.
What he didn’t realise was that Newcastle’s manager Howe and his assistant Graeme Jones were right behind him.
Howe and Jones glance up at the camera and it’s all excruciatingly awkward for a brief moment.
The Newcastle boss is a class act and a calm, cool customer. So it didn’t provoke any sort of reaction.
But Howe’s rosy cheeks were a slightly darker shade of red after the awkwardly timed celebration.
All good fun and Newcastle will undoubtedly bounce back as they have a fantastic side.
That’s what makes West Ham’s surprise win so special.
The Hammers must use this as a springboard now to bigger and better things.
With a run of very winnable games after Arsenal, fans will be hoping to see plenty more behind-the-scenes footage in the coming weeks and months.
